04 May Love of Letterpress
We set ourselves a challenge to produce a beautiful piece of typographic design to champion the possibilities of print rather than the continuous bombardment of digital promotions.
Exploring the world of letterpress, the standard printing technique founded over five centuries ago. Letterpress printing is the ‘relief’ printing of text and images using a press with movable type or plates, in which a reversed, raised surface is inked and then pressed into a sheet of paper.
Wood type was traditionally used for large projects, like posters and billboards and for commercial printing like books and newspapers, metal type was used as it was smaller and lighter. Letterpress typestyling reflected the trends of the era, from Victorian to Art Nouveau to the clean, contemporary design of post war design.
Letterpress is more than a print onto paper, it engages the senses and is a design that you can feel and touch. paper. It has a simple elegance and beauty that conveys its history and heritage, whilst maintaining a connection to the past because of the old nature of the printing process.
The perfect print process for the 12 days of Christmas poster – each once individually printed and unique.
